More than 1-in-4 Americans are enrolled through their state, who receive matching funds from the federal government to subsidize the cost of the program. As a safety net insurance program, Medicaid helps vulnerable populations better manage chronic and acute conditions by enabling better access to primary care services. When patients better manage their health, they avoid costly and unnecessary trips to the ED.
